Earth Day!

Good Morning and Happy April 22nd, 2014!  Today is Earth Day!  While I promise not to harp on it being Earth day, today seemed like a great opportunity to consider both the Environmental and Economic benefits of shopping at local stores.  Below is an image and a series of questions.  Please look at the image and then respond as best as you can (3-4 sentences each) to each question posed.

Question 1: What does it mean to you to shop locally?
Question 2:  Looking at the image above, what are some of the primary reasons it benefits your local communities economy to shop at locally owned and run businesses?  Give specific examples from the chart that highlight how much of your money stays nearby, where your money goes, etc.
Question 3:  Although it is not specified in the image (and, of course, because today is earth day) what do you see as the environmental benefits of shopping at locally owned and operated businesses? You can take a second to do a quick online Google search for an answer ... you'll find plenty of sites with ideas!

Remember, your response to each question should be 3-4 sentences ... yes, a little bit longer of a blog post but a good opportunity to do some critical thinking about economics and the environment on earth day!

Thank you!

The Final Chapter!

Good Morning and Happy Monday!  Welcome back from Spring Break 2014 and the beginning of the final stretch of the school year!  We literally have 6 weeks or 23 days of class left until you begin your senior activities and step on the stage for graduation!  I am very excited and proud of all of you and your accomplishments to date but it is important to finish out the school year strong, motivated and ready to take your next step forward.

As we ease into today, how was your spring break?  Did you work a lot?  Play a lot?  A little of both? How did you spend your spring break?  What was your favorite activity over the break?  In addition, what are you looking forward to as we approach the end of the school year?  Are you simply excited for graduation or are there other things you are looking forward to during these last few weeks?  Finally, what is one thing you need to do/accomplish this week that has been troubling you/making you anxious that if you take care of, you will feel better!

Thanks for a great response!  We'll get into our groups shortly and continue with creating our personal budgets!

Your Life Situation Card and A Budget

Good Morning! Happy Friday!!  Happy Spring Break (almost)!!  I hope you have a fun, relaxing week ahead of you!!  Don't forget to come back to school recharged and ready to finish the school year on the strongest note possible.

The past 2 days of class we have been working with a life situation card and developing a budget for that individual/family.  This has included you determining your Net Monthly Income, setting budget guidelines, and looking for housing!  A few questions:

  1. What did you notice about your Gross Annual Income and the Net Monthly Income.  Were you surprised and/or disappointed at the amount of taxes taken from your paycheck each month?  What was your Net Monthly Income and do you think it would be realistic to live on that type of budget with your current lifestyle?  Explain!
  2. What was your impression of the Budget Guidelines worksheet.  Which of the categories listed seem most important to you to budget for and which categories seem least important?  Do you think the breakdown of how much you can spend in each category works well for your envisioned lifestyle?
  3. Lastly, in looking for housing, what did you find your adjusted monthly mortgage payment to be if you bought a home vs. the amount it would cost you each month to rent?  Does this make you reconsider the possibility of purchasing a home vs. renting one?  What are the pros and cons of renting?  What are the pros and cons of owning a home?  In filling out the home buying sheet, what would appear to be the biggest barrier in your purchasing of a home?
Thanks and we will get started shortly!

Reasons You Need a Budget

Good Morning and Happy Wednesday!  One last block day before we head out on Spring Break!  Spring Break should be great!  For some of you it will be an opportunity to catch up on your sleep, for others of you it will be an opportunity to earn a little extra money by working some extra hours, others of you might catch up on your school work and my guess is that a few of you will plan to have fun, shop, go to the movies, etc.  As you are now moving towards the end of your high school career it is a good time to start establishing some good spending habits so you can ensure you can get what you want.  With that in mind, please read the following article:

After reading the article summarize why it is of critical importance for you to begin budgeting your money now.  Be sure to include examples from the article itself.  In addition, please discuss the likelihood of you beginning to budget your money now.  Have you already?  Do you know anyone who is either very good at budgeting their money or someone who could use some help in that department?  Which of the 5 reasons listed is most convincing to you in terms of the need to begin establishing a budget?

Thanks for your thoughtful, thorough 6-8 sentence response.  We will begin with our lesson shortly which, yes, continues with the idea of budgeting :)

Wrapping Up Yesterday's Discussion

Yesterday we had an in-depth discussion on the importance of furthering your education and the benefits it can bring over the course of your lifetime.  Finally, as we close out today's class period, please write a call to action using both articles that we read today.  Within this call to action you will need to:

  • Analyze the importance of an education
  • Discuss what you believe the state's role in that process should be
  • Use very specific statistics to further your argument
  • Ensure your paragraph would be motivating to yourself, your neighbor or anyone else moving forward in their academic career
  • Within this paragraph I would also encourage you to use first hand examples including:
    • your personal experiences and/or those of people you know and how their education (or lack thereof) has affected their daily lives.
    • Your thoughts on how a free education may change one's outlook on furthering their education as we move forward.
  • This final paragraph should be thorough, thoughtful and should also include some statistics from the articles you read that strengthen your argument.

The Importance of Professionalism, Responsibility and the College Education!

Good Morning and Happy Monday -

We are just 5 short days away from Spring Break which I am sure everyone is excited about.  Today, however, we are going to take a moment to read two articles and reflect both individually and as a class on your thoughts regarding the two.

The first article we are going to read discusses the rising cost of not going to College.

Article can be found here: http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2014/02/11/the-rising-cost-of-not-going-to-college/

This article discusses the importance of furthering your education and gives detailed statistics and facts that will surely either curve or reinforce your opinion about a college education.  As you read the article, please take notes on a piece of paper and then share the five most interesting facts you learned or that stood out to you as you read this article on your blog.  Be sure to include an introduction of what the article was about before discussing your five chosen pointers.

The second article we are going to read is on Tennessee's plan to approve free community college for all high school graduates.

Article can be found here: http://goo.gl/WUsQac

This article, as the title implies, discusses the motivation behind Tennessee's plan to offer a free community college education to its residents.  In addition, it explains how a state like Tennessee would fund such a plan.  As you read the article, please highlight the following:

  • What does the article discuss
  • What are the benefits of a plan such as this one
  • What negatives can you envision about putting a plan like this into place
Finally, as we close out today's class period, please write a call to action using both articles that we read today.  Within this call to action you will need to analyze the importance of an education and the state's role in that process.  As part of this, I would imagine you might discuss your experiences personally and/or those of people you know and how their education (or lack thereof) has affected their daily lives.  One discussion point could certainly be on how a free education, such as the one that Tennessee is proposing, may change one's outlook on furthering their education as we move forward.  This final paragraph should be thorough, thoughtful and should also include some statistics from the articles you read that strengthen your argument.

Thank you.

4th Quarter

Incredible!  It's already here!!  We have made it through 3/4's of the year (maybe even a bit more) and the light is finally visible at the end of the tunnel!  With that said, as exciting as 4th quarter arriving can be, it does have the potential to be not only exciting but frightening as well!  Now that the 4th quarter has arrived for you, what are some things you are incredibly excited about with the end of the school year on the horizon and what are some things that you are nervous, concerned about as June arrives?  Is there anything you want to make sure you do/accomplish before you leave M-A for the year?

Thanks for your thoughts - we will get started shortly :)

“Sure, I’d Make That Bet”

“You’re going to make an extra $2 million a year – or $10 million a year – for putting your financial institution at risk. Someone else pays the bill. You don’t pay the bill. Would you make that bet?

Most people who worked on Wall Street said, ‘Sure, I’d make that bet.’” - Frank Partnoy, Inside Job Inside Job criticizes several Wall Street executives who made tens of millions – or hundreds of millions – of dollars, even as their firms collapsed. For example, Joseph Cassano, an officer of AIG’s Financial Products division, received $315 million from 1987 until he retired in March 2008, six months before AIG was rescued by the federal government. Robert Rubin, the former Treasury Secretary and head of Goldman Sachs, made $126 million during eight years as a board member and advisor to Citigroup through 2009.  Companies often award annual bonuses to  employees after a good year. But 2008 was hardly a good year for Wall Street. Profits were down, stock prices plummeted, and many banks nearly collapsed.

In 2008, the federal government implemented the “Troubled Asset Relief Program,” known as TARP, to support the banks. Some argued TARP was unnecessary; others said major banks would have been forced into bankruptcy without it.

Below is a table of the net income (or losses) for 2008 for several of the major financial institutions mentioned in the film, along with the total amount of bonuses those firms paid that year, the number of employees who  received more than $1 million or $10 million in bonuses, and the amount of TARP support each firm received. The dollar amounts are in billions.

For your blog today, again, please discuss the following:
  1. Why did these banks pay such large bonuses in 2008
  2. What grade would you give the decision to award these bonuses?
  3. Finally, how might the prospect of such large bonuses affect the behavior of employees? In theory, people have an incentive to perform well if they make more money when their contribution to their bank’s profits is greater. But what happens to the employees when the bank loses money or collapses? If the banks still pay bonuses, and employees know losses will be borne by investors and taxpayers, will they take on too much risk?

Please be sure to respond to this blog post thoughtfully and thoroughly.  Please also number your responses in your blog post. Thank you!

After completing the post, please complete the following form:

It’s Utterly Mad

For centuries, scientists have searched for ways to mix different materials to create gold. In 1995, David Li, a thirty-something math whiz from rural China, was doing something similar with loans. Li was trying to figure out how to mix risky loans together to get risk-free ones.

Surprisingly, his great insight came from death. Li knew about the “broken heart” problem, in which people die more quickly after their spouses die. Li saw an analogy to loan defaults. When one borrower defaulted, others were more likely to default. Not everyone defaulted at the same time, but the defaults were correlated – they moved together to some degree. Li used the same math that statisticians used to model how people reacted when their spouses died to model how different loans reacted when one of them “died,” or defaulted. Li told the Wall Street Journal, “Suddenly I thought that the problem I was trying to solve was exactly like the problem these guys were trying to solve. Default is like the death of a company, so we should model this the same way we model human life.”

According to the math, huge amounts of risk disappeared when you pooled risky assets together in a CDO. The key assumption was that although some loans might default at the same time, not all of them would default simultaneously. For example, if you assumed the chances of two-thirds of the loans defaulting at the same time were close to zero, you could split the CDO into a risky piece (which would bear the first losses when loans in the pool defaulted) and a safer piece (which would not lose any money unless more than one-third of the loans defaulted).  Then, the safer piece would be rated AAA.

The CDO that Allan Sloan describes in Inside Job was based on exactly this assumption. The banks and rating agencies assumed that, although some of the mortgage loans in the pool might default at the same time, the likelihood of more than one-third defaulting together was basically zero. In other words, they assumed the correlation was low.

Historically, this correlation had been low, especially as housing prices rose. But what would happen if the nature of the loans changed (they were made to borrowers with bad credit who put virtually no money down), and then housing prices fell? Even a slight decline in housing prices would pull borrowers underwater, meaning the amount they had borrowed was more than the value of their houses. Then, the correlation would be high. Everyone would default.

The experts who put together subprime CDOs vastly underestimated the correlation of defaults.
  1. Why might they have done this?
  2. Was it an innocent mistake, which surprised the banks and rating agencies as much as it surprised most investors? Or was it an intentional ruse, which generated phantom profits and bonuses, even as it sowed the seeds of financial destruction?
  3. How, exactly, was it “mad”?

Luck of the Irish

Good Morning and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

While in middle and high school here in America St. Patrick's Day tends to be a day to wear all green and pinch your friends who don't, the holiday is very real and a celebration native to Ireland.  To kick off the morning today, it only seemed appropriate to spend a moment looking into the true meaning of the holiday.  For your post, share what or whom the celebration of St. Patrick's Day actually commemorates and 3 interesting/fun facts you can find about the holiday!

Thanks and we will continue with the Inside Job shortly.

The Inside Job Pt. 1

Good Morning and Happy Friday!

Today we will be beginning the movie the Inside Job.  Among the many awards this movie has received, perhaps its highest honer was an Academy Award for best Documentary Feature.  The movie does a fantastic job of showing the collapse of both the financial system in the US and around the world.  One of the most important factors in this collapse was the home mortgage industry.  For today's post, please respond to the following questions:

What is a loan?  Do you know anyone who has borrowed money to buy a house?  Who lent them the money?  Did the borrower have to make a down-payment?  Why?

In addition, it is important to know that if a borrower has a bade credit history, as about 1 in 4 peoples do, then their loan is known as a "sub-prime" mortgage.  Why would a bank even consider making a sub-prime loan?

With a little background on the issue above, you should have a solid footing in understanding the concepts of this video!  I hope you enjoy, it is a fantastic movie - one of my very favorite documentaries of all time.

Finance Park!

Good Morning!!

Last week you spent two days learning more about taxes, where they go and how they are determined.  What did you find most interesting about this unit?  What are the 3 types of taxes that are collected and how is that money reinvested into our society and/or our government.

As a second part of the post, see if you can find answers to the following questions:

1.  In San Mateo County, how is the amount of property tax due each year determined?
2.  If you were going on an all out shopping spree, which state(s) would you most want to be shopping in?
3.  What, in your opinion, is the best use for income tax money that is collected?

Thanks for your great responses!  I look forward to reading them and discussing them in class.

Creditworthiness

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!  Today we are going to continue our preparation for watching the movie the Inside Job.  To get started today, discuss in your opinion what creditworthiness is.  Feel free to discuss it on two levels.  What would creditworthiness be in your life as of today and what does creditworthiness describe in regards to people borrowing money from a financial institution?

Thanks and we will get started shortly!

Let's Get Rich!

Okay ... well, let's be realistic.  Life brings different opportunities and it is your decision to make choices to better yourself and your situation.  Today's post has two parts:

Part 1:  What do you think would be your investing style if you were to invest in the stock market?  Would you invest and how would you choose your stocks?  Would you choose stocks that are safe and might increase gradually over time or would you be a bit riskier and look for stocks thathave a lot of potential to be successful (but the same chance of failing).

Part 2:  What are some ways you can invest in yourself to ensure you have as many opportunities as possible?  What do you think the keys are to your personal and financial success moving forward?

Happy Friday!

Preparing for the Future

Good Morning and Happy Friday!  As part of your every day life, I am sure that you are taking steps to make sure you are being successful and with that comes making some adjustments.  The same is true with the Academy program.  We want to continue to evolve to make sure that this program is as beneficial for you as possible.  With that in mind, for today's blog I am going to ask you to do the following:

1.  Please discuss all of the things that you love about the Academy.  What makes it unique, special, comfortable for you and how has it helped you be successful as a student?
2.  We will call this the constructive criticism piece which is important for anyone or anything to ever improve.  What would you like to see change about the program, how could it support you better and/or if you could make a single change in the courses, activities, structure, etc what would that be.
3.  Respond to the following set of questions, honestly, located at http://goo.gl/hVMWkc

Thank you very much!!

Following Up on Your Academy Check - In and an Explanation of the Gradebook!

Good Morning!!  I hope you woke up on the right side of the bed and have a bunch of energy today because some of you have your work cut out for you :)  While some of you may have already noticed, I left a number of assignments with no grade in the grade book before the progress reports were due - I'll explain why live in person today, however, those blank spots have now been filled in with a "0" indicating that the assignment has not been completed.  Today is your one and only day (90 minutes) to complete and submit those assignments.  Some have been on Schoology since the first day of the semester (I don't just post these assignments for fun) and they are still incomplete.

Here is the protocol -

1.  Find an assignment in Infinite Campus with a "0".  If the assignment is marked with an "M" for missing you may not make it up!
2.  Complete the assignment.  You can complete it using the link provided, type your responses into an email or even hand write your responses and turn it in - whatever is easiest for you!
3.  Any assignments submitted electronically, you must also complete a post it note with your name and each assignment completed.  You will hand that post it note to me (or the substitute) at the end of the class period so that I can then check what assignments you have successfully completed.
4.  Once you have completed all of your assignments for my class, this time can/should be used to:

  • Complete you FAFSA (DUE MARCH 2nd)
  • Research and Apply for Scholarships
  • Contact the school you plan to attend and register for placement exams/get answers to questions you might have about enrollment
  • Complete any/all work for your other classes
This time is dedicated to you and should be taken full advantage of!  Today is a study hall - you should be sitting in your assigned seats and should be working quietly and on your own.  I will not accept assignments from the first few weeks of school after today so assignments not completed in class that are marked with a "0" should be completed by midnight tonight.  You can find the corresponding assignments in Schoology.  The assignments in Infinite Campus have the same title as those in Schoology so your missing assignments should be easy to find!

If you have any questions, concerns, etc. please be sure to email me during class so that you can move forward with your assignments and be successful!

Thank you in advance for an outstanding work period.  I will have your new, updated grades by Tuesday of next week!!  I will also collect your JA Finance Park Workbook next Tuesday.  As of today, every single page up through page 25 should be complete!  No exceptions!  With that said ... lets get to work!!

How much work do you and your 2nd period classmates have to make up?  As of this morning:

9 students have F's
11 students have D's
3 students have C's
3 students have B's
1 student has an A

Again, no late work will be accepted after todays block period ... so submit the work, complete a post it note and return it to the sub before the end of class!!  No exceptions!
